X-Peri-Mas #20

You can’t rely on the weather. If you want snow this Christmas you might just need to make your own fake snow! Here are a couple of recipes for fake snow that you can make from things around your own home. See which one works for you. We’ve mixed a couple together at the end.

2020 edit: find out what real snow is head over to the Boom Advent post!

fake snow

I’ve tried out a couple of fake snow recipes to try and find one that feels wet and slippy like the real thing but also forms a powder. Turns out snow is quite a complicated structure to replicate!

What you will need:

  • Tissue paper
  • A food processor
  • Hair conditioner
  • Bicarbonate of soda

How to make fake snow:

Mix together 3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda with 1 teaspoon (the smaller one!) of hair conditioner. Mix them really thoroughly with a spoon or fork and then get in there with your hands and knead them together. You might find that it feels a bit slimy at first but it should form into a slight damp, ever so slightly sticky powder that you can squeeze into balls if you want to but will sprinkle between your fingers.

Rip up about 10 pieces of toilet tissue into the smallest pieces you can. Then put them into a food processor and whizz them up until you have a powder of paper. This shouldn’t take long, just do be careful of the spinny blades.

Mix together the paper powder and the bicarbonate powder. This should give you that ideal mix of dry and sticky powder and give you a fake snow that you can sprinkle and watch it drift down but also squeeze together and form a snowman!

Mixing the two gets a good fake snow
Here’s the combination of the two – paper and bicarbonate of soda/conditioner mixed together.

Make yourself a Christmas scene and sprinkle some snow over the top!
